Economy awaits Onam

Onam is the biggest shopping season in Kerala. Economy eagerly awaits a heady Onam every year as it is the momentous time when every Malayali open their wallets. After a tepid Onam last year, expectations are huge this time. The buzz has started even though it is still a month away.

Onam is a season when consumers are canvassed to spend for their wants rather than needs. Consumers will be convinced that they are getting unforeseen and unbelievable offers. It's a time when consumer prudence generally takes a walk and returns back after their indulgence only to realize that they have been outsmarted by some marketing professionals. But it doesn't matter as the saying goes 'Kaanam Vittum Onam Vanganam (Unnanam)'.

Like every year, electronic goods, textiles, gold, automobiles, fancy ornaments, home decor & furnishings and alcohol would be on demand like there is no tomorrow. Discount offers will be a regular feature at every store. Electronic goods manufacturer LG aims a turnover of Rs.375 crore during this Onam and spends Rs.15 crore for promotions which will be endorsed by Mohanlal. Competitor, Samsung is expecting a sales turnover of Rs.230 crore in this season. We will see almost all recognizable faces on TVs and Paper, endorsing one brand or another.

Media behemoths in Kerala want their rightful share of advertising pie earmarked by various brands. Their campaigns are in their final stages. Manorama and Mathrubhumi are talking to media agencies and professionals across India. They both are spending huge on advertisements and newsletters communicating to people that matters. Manorama has taken an innovative approach and decided to make surprise visits to agency offices engaging decision makers with 'pulikkali'. As always the effort and spend by Manorama is miles ahead of Mathrubhumi. But that shouldn't worry Mathrubhumi as any one deciding to spend money on media in Kerala cannot ignore them. It is a wonderful free ride!

As per the economic indicators, everyone will have their coffers filled with money by the end of Onam. Economy has more than stabilized compared to last Onam. Government has been spending huge as election is less than a year away. Tourism industry is on an upswing again. Agriculture didn't do badly. Cash crops are on a high note. Rubber growers struck gold with prices touching Rs.185/kg, an all time high. Spice exports recorded 30% growth in April-May. All these indicate a large section of population with enough savings to spend during Onam.
